Historia

These are studies from life carried out for the head of the black water carrier who appears in the cartoon for the tapestry A Blind Man Playing Guitar which was destined to decorate the anteroom of the bedroom of the Prince and Princess of Asturias in the Palace of El Pardo.

The drawing entered the collection of the Jovellanos Institute in 1888, as recorded in the inventory of drawings created by José Moreno Villa. It was registered under catalogue number 718, and was destroyed in the fire at the Institute on the morning of 21 August 1936.

Análisis artístico

This is the only known preparatory study for the cartoon in question, which suggests that Goya was particularly interested in this head.

The paper features a watermark comprising a coat of arms and scroll crowned with a fleur de lis.
