Historia

The drawing belonged to Goya's son Javier and then to his grandson Mariano. It subsequently passed to the Carderera collection and from there to the Prado Museum.

Análisis artístico

There are no substantial differences between the preparatory drawing and the engraving, which indicates that Goya had a very clear vision of the scene when he sketched the paper. One of the few changes in the drawing with respect to the final result is that the horse in the background is closer to the one in the centre of the scene. In addition, in the engraving, Goya outlines the rest of the horses and riders a little more clearly.

The painter has worked with precision and great skill on the anatomy of the collapsing animal in his preparatory drawing and has forcefully marked the boot of the rider who falls from it. When the drawing is transferred to the copper plate, the quality with which the horse has been depicted is slightly lost.
