This drawing, like the set of preparatory drawings for the rest of the engravings in the series, was part of the Carderera collection and subsequently passed to the Prado National Museum, where it is now kept.
In the preparatory drawing for engraving no. 70, They Don't Know the Way, Goya is more confused than in the print. He retains the composition in which a row of figures advances from the background in an undulating form. However, in the sketch there are many more than in the final result. Furthermore, it is difficult to discern whether they are tied together, which is much clearer in the engraving as it helps to interpret the image.
In the preparatory drawing, Goya has sketched an architectural structure in the background on the right-hand side. It is a massive form that disappears in the print, perhaps to prevent anything from detracting from the row of men advancing towards the viewer.
