Historia

See Young woman with forehead wearing a small hat.

Line of provenance: Javier Goya, Mariano Goya, Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861), Mariano Carderera (1880). The Directorate General of Public Instruction, which acquired the collection of Goya drawings owned by Mariano Carderera, assigned it to the Prado Museum by Royal Order of 12 November 1886.

Análisis artístico

See Young woman with forehead wearing a small hat corresponding to the first drawing of the Sanlúcar Album or Album A. A dancer is standing in profile, wiggling her body and stamping her feet on the floor to the melody of a guitarist, who is seated on a chair in the background. Although she appears to be standing still, she evokes a latent movement as can be seen in the opposing position of her feet. There is a clear attempt at perspective, drawing the figure of the guitarist with softer strokes. According to the traditional interpretation of Album A, this scene is an expression of Goya's experiences on his trip to Andalusia and his stay in Sanlúcar de Barrameda in 1796, where he became familiar with flamenco. But this belief contradicts the chronology now assumed for Album A.

On the reverse of the sheet is the drawing The Duchess of Alba holding Maria de la Luz in her arms.
